I am sitting here in front of my computer on the back porch being eaten alive by mosquitoes. In case you were curious, we have a serious mosquito problem in southeast Texas every summer. There have been a couple of tropical depressions in the gulf, so far, that have made the issue, well, more of an issue. There are trucks and planes that cover the local towns in the evening with a fog of mosquito spray. Not just once a night but every few hours. Of course, we are told that it is not harmful to humans but let’s get real for a moment. I’m sorry, but are you trying to tell me that this shit is ok for small children but will wipe out all the mosquitoes in the area?
So, I am driving home from work the other night with my window halfway down, because I’m smoking a cigarette (which I chose I to do)…oh, it was organic by the way…and I have my A/C going because it’s still close to 90 degrees outside at 11:30pm. Anyway, I see headlights off in the distance, and as they get closer I see what looks like the lights of a cop car about to pull over a drunk driver that’s headed home from the local watering hole. It turns out it is the “mosquito sprayer” headed right towards me. Being a bit sleep deprived I totally panicked. With my burning cigarette, I got the window up, turned off the A/C, held my breath, and managed the run myself off the road a bit to avoid the toxic fumes. Honestly, with the few cases of West Nile Virus in Texas, and I mean a few, what is more important, an epidemic of respiratory problems, birth defects, and cancer or a couple of months of annoying buzzing and itchy bites?
